Reclaim Your Independence: Expert Neurological Physiotherapy
Living with a neurological disorder—or recovering from a sudden neurological event like a stroke—can feel incredibly overwhelming. When the communication between your brain, spinal cord, and muscles is disrupted, it can rob you of your mobility, your balance, and your independence.
At Encore Physiotherapy and Wellness, our neurological physiotherapists are dedicated to helping you rebuild those connections. We treat patients who suffer from movement difficulties due to injuries or ailments of the nervous system. Our ultimate goal is to restore as much function as possible, so you can move freely and confidently.
The Brain-Body Connection: Combining Neuro Therapy and Physiotherapy
Healing a neurological condition requires a two-pronged approach.
Neuro therapy is a non-invasive treatment method that analyzes your brain activity to understand how your neural pathways can be “rewired” (a concept known as neuroplasticity) to improve function. It helps us determine exactly which areas of your nervous system need the most work.
Physiotherapy is how we carry out those tasks. By participating in targeted physical treatments following a neurological injury, you can retrain your muscles, improve your coordination, and regain your independence much faster.
Our physiotherapists work with patients facing a wide range of neurological disorders, including:
Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells in the brain responsible for movement. Common symptoms include severe tremors, slurred speech, rigid muscles, and irregular facial expressions.
Fortunately, physiotherapy can help slow the physical progression of Parkinson’s and provide significant relief for its symptoms. We focus on improving your flexibility, building core strength, and addressing specific challenges like abnormal gait (shuffling), “freezing” episodes, and dystonia (painful muscle cramps).
Stroke Rehabilitation
Approximately 50,000 Canadians experience a stroke each year, and 75% of survivors are left with some level of physical disability. A stroke affects movement by cutting off blood supply to specific areas of the brain.
Physiotherapy is a critical component of post-stroke rehabilitation. We work to improve your balance, restore your walking pattern, and teach you how to safely use assistive devices. We utilize advanced therapies such as:
Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy: Encouraging the use of an impaired limb by restricting the unaffected one.
Motor Imagery: Mentally practicing movements to stimulate brain pathways.
Biofeedback: A neurological therapy that uses electrodes attached to your skin to display your muscle activity on a screen. This helps you build awareness of your muscle function and learn how to consciously control it again.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Multiple Sclerosis is a condition where the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers, causing communication issues between your brain and the rest of your body.
Common symptoms include chronic pain, profound fatigue, and muscle weakness. Our physiotherapists can help you manage and decrease these symptoms. We provide targeted stretches to ease painful muscle spasms, specific exercises to increase your strength without draining your energy, and balance activities to help you move safely.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurons controlling voluntary muscles. It typically begins with weakness in the hands, feet, or extremities—such as frequent tripping or dropping items—before progressing to the central part of the body.
While there is currently no cure for ALS, the goal of our rehabilitative team is to help you maintain your function and independence for as long as possible. We focus heavily on preventing secondary complications, like fall-related injuries, by teaching safe movement strategies. As the disease progresses, we also recommend and fit adaptive equipment, such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and braces, to ensure your ongoing safety and comfort.
