Grasp Life Without Pain: Expert Care for Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Injuries
You use your elbows, wrists, and hands constantly throughout the day, but nothing makes you realize just how much you rely on them quite like feeling that first sharp ache.
Just imagine your typical morning: you get out of bed, brush your teeth, shower, get dressed, make breakfast, and grip the steering wheel for your commute. At this point, you have already used your upper extremities hundreds of times—and you’re still only at the beginning of your day!
Whether your discomfort is due to an acute injury, repetitive strain, or an underlying condition, it can severely impact your quality of life. Fortunately, you don’t have to just endure it. At Encore Physiotherapy and Wellness, our licensed physiotherapists can help you find lasting relief, restore your mobility, and get back to the tasks you love without pain.
Understanding Your Symptoms
Short-term pain in the elbow, wrist, or hand typically results from a sudden injury (like a fall), while long-term, chronic pain often points to an overuse injury or illness. Your pain might be mild, severe, or intermittent (coming and going throughout the day).
You may also experience secondary symptoms, such as:
Numbness or tingling in the extremities, especially in the fingers.
Weakened grip strength (dropping items frequently).
Stiffness in the joints, particularly first thing in the morning.
A “catching” or locking sensation in your fingers or elbow.
Where is Your Pain Coming From?
Because the arm is an intricate mechanical chain, pinpointing the exact source of the pain requires expertise. Here are a few of the most common culprits:
Arthritis: A very common condition affecting millions of Canadians. Typically caused by wear-and-tear or an immune response that impacts the joint cartilage. Physiotherapy helps improve joint motion, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the surrounding muscles to take pressure off the joint.
Elbow Bursitis: At the tip of the elbow is a fluid-filled sac (bursa) that acts as a cushion. When this sac is compressed from a direct impact or prolonged leaning, it can swell and become highly painful.
Tennis Elbow & Golfer’s Elbow: Despite their names, these repetitive-use injuries affect more than just athletes! Tennis elbow causes pain on the outside (lateral) aspect of the elbow, while golfer’s elbow causes pain on the inside (medial) aspect. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): The carpal tunnel protects the median nerve on the inside of your wrist. If this tunnel narrows due to repetitive use (like heavy keyboard typing or assembly work), it pinches the nerve, causing numbness, tingling, and pain in the thumb and first two fingers.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Similar to CTS, this is a nerve compression issue. It occurs when repetitive pressure is placed on the ulnar nerve (your “funny bone”) inside the elbow, leading to pain and numbness that radiates down into the ring and pinky fingers.
Strains and Sprains: A strain refers to a stretched or torn muscle/tendon, while a sprain refers to damaged ligaments (the tissue connecting bone to bone). These often happen after catching a heavy object or bracing a fall with an outstretched hand.
