Empowering Women’s Health: Specialized Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
A woman’s body goes through extraordinary changes over a lifetime. From the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth to the hormonal shifts of menopause, these transitions can take a significant toll on your core, your pelvic floor, and your overall musculoskeletal system.
For too long, issues like pelvic pain, incontinence, and severe core weakness have been dismissed as “just a normal part of being a woman or having a baby.” At Encore Physiotherapy and Wellness, we firmly believe that you do not have to live with discomfort. Our specialized Women’s Health Physiotherapy programs provide the discrete, expert care you need to restore your strength, confidence, and quality of life.
Uncompromising Privacy and Comfort
Discussing and treating pelvic floor issues requires the utmost discretion and trust. We have designed our clinic to meet the highest standards of patient care and hospitality. All of our Women’s Health assessments and treatments take place in fully closed, private treatment rooms, ensuring your absolute comfort, dignity, and confidentiality from the moment you step through our doors.
What Makes Women’s Health Physiotherapy Different?
While general physiotherapy is fantastic for addressing standard musculoskeletal injuries like a sprained ankle or a stiff neck, Women’s Health Physiotherapy is a highly specialized sub-discipline.
Our specifically trained physiotherapists focus on the intricate network of muscles, ligaments, and nerves that support your pelvic organs and core. We specialize in treating complex, intimate conditions such as:
Bladder and bowel incontinence (leaking when you laugh, cough, or jump)
Chronic pelvic pain or pain during intercourse
Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation following pregnancy)
Lower back pain and sciatica (radiculopathy) during and after pregnancy
Pelvic organ prolapse
The Power of Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
Your pelvic floor is the “hammock” of muscles at the base of your pelvis. When these muscles are too weak—or conversely, too tight and in spasm—it severely impacts your daily function.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy aims to actively rehabilitate this muscular hammock. Through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and neuromuscular retraining, we help you enhance your muscle coordination, regain total bladder and bowel control, and significantly reduce chronic pelvic pain.
Prenatal Care: Preparing for a Healthy Birth
Physiotherapy isn’t just for after the baby arrives. Prenatal physiotherapy is an incredible tool to prepare your body for the physical marathon of labor and delivery.
Pain Management: We help manage common pregnancy discomforts like pubic bone pain, coccyx (tailbone) pain, and severe lower back aches.
Labor Preparation: We teach you optimal pelvic alignment, build your core stability, and help prepare your pelvic floor muscles to stretch effectively, reducing the risk of tearing during delivery.
Postpartum Rehabilitation: Rebuilding Your Core
After childbirth, your body requires dedicated time and specific strategies to heal. We generally recommend scheduling a comprehensive postpartum evaluation within the first 6 to 8 weeks after delivery (though specialized, gentle care can be provided even earlier if you are experiencing severe pain).
Postpartum rehabilitation focuses on safely reconnecting your brain to your core and back muscles. We provide specialized protocols to close abdominal separation (Diastasis Recti) and ensure you have the structural stability required to safely return to running, weightlifting, or high-impact exercise without risking injury or prolapse.
Navigating Menopausal Changes
The sharp decline in estrogen during menopause doesn’t just cause hot flashes; it directly impacts your musculoskeletal health. Decreased estrogen can lead to reduced muscle mass, joint stiffness, and a drop in bone density (osteopenia and osteoporosis).
Physiotherapy is a vital tool during this transition. We design tailored, weight-bearing exercise programs to naturally improve your bone density, enhance your joint stability, and keep you active and strong for decades to come.
Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?
In most cases, you have “direct access” to physiotherapy in Ontario, meaning you do not need a referral from a physician to schedule an assessment and begin treatment. However, if you are planning to use extended health insurance benefits to cover your visits, we recommend checking your specific policy, as some providers still require a doctor’s note for reimbursement.
