Vestibular Therapy
Stop the Spinning: Specialized Vestibular Therapy for Balance and Vertigo
Feelings of dizziness or vertigo can be incredibly isolating. They can shrink your world, making it difficult—or even frightening—to perform simple tasks like getting out of bed, driving, or walking through a grocery store without the fear of falling.
If you feel like the world is spinning, you are not alone. It is estimated that approximately 1.5 million Canadians suffer from vertigo, and nearly one-third of Canadians will experience balance-related issues in their lifetime.
At Encore Physiotherapy and Wellness, we offer highly effective Vestibular Rehabilitation designed to retrain your balance system and help you move with confidence once again.
What is the Vestibular System?
Your vestibular system is a complex sensory system located in your inner ear. It acts like a sophisticated GPS, sending constant signals to your brain about your head position and movement in relation to gravity.
When this system is disrupted by infection, injury, or aging, the signals become “scrambled.” This results in the hallmark symptoms of vestibular dysfunction:
Vertigo (a spinning sensation)
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Nausea or vomiting triggered by movement
Poor balance or a “staggering” gait
Sensitivity to bright lights or busy environments
How Does Vestibular Therapy Help?
Vestibular therapy is a specialized, exercise-based program aimed at “re-calibrating” the connection between your inner ear, your eyes, and your brain.
Our physiotherapists use evidence-based techniques to help your nervous system compensate for balance deficits. Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment may include:
Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers (e.g., The Epley Maneuver): For patients with BPPV (positional vertigo), we use specific head movements to move displaced “crystals” in the inner ear back into their proper place.
Gaze Stabilization Exercises: Targeted movements to help your eyes stay focused while your head is moving.
Habituation Exercises: Controlled exposure to the specific movements that trigger your dizziness, helping your brain become less sensitive to them over time.
Balance Retraining: Challenging your stability in a safe, controlled environment to reduce your risk of falls.
Regain Your Stability and Your Confidence
You don’t have to “just live” with dizziness. Our team is dedicated to providing the specialized care you need to steady yourself while standing, walking, and enjoying life.
During your initial evaluation, we will perform a thorough assessment of your eye movements and balance to pinpoint the exact cause of your vertigo. From there, we build a personalized roadmap to get you back on your feet.
