Back Pain & Sciatica Relief
Stop Masking the Symptoms and Treat the Root Cause
Do you wake up in the morning dreading that nagging ache in your lower back? Are you constantly modifying your daily routine because you are terrified of “throwing your back out”?
You are not alone—four out of five Canadians will experience at least one episode of lower back pain in their lifetime. But just because it is common does not mean you have to accept it as normal. Pain is your body’s way of signaling an underlying issue. If you are relying on medications just to get through the day, you are only masking the problem.
At Encore Physiotherapy and Wellness, our goal is to help you lessen your reliance on pain medications, avoid invasive procedures, and actually fix the mechanical issues keeping you in pain.
Understanding Your Pain: Back Pain vs. Sciatica
While they are often confused, general back pain and sciatica require different treatment approaches. Here is how to tell the difference:
General Back Pain Back pain specifically affects the upper, mid, or lower back. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (lasting longer than three months).
How it develops: It is often the result of repetitive strain (like repeatedly bending to pick up a toddler), poor posture, or a sudden trauma like a motor vehicle accident or lifting injury. As we age, degenerative disc disease can also cause dull, aching lower back pain that makes standing or walking difficult.
Sciatica (Lumbar Radiculopathy) Sciatica refers to a highly uncomfortable, radiating pain that travels along the sciatic nerve—the largest nerve in your body.
How it develops: When the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or irritated (often due to a herniated disc, arthritis, or severely tight hip/glute muscles), it shoots pain down your body.
The Symptoms: Instead of a generalized ache in your back, you will likely feel a sharp, burning, or stinging sensation radiating deep into your buttock, down the back of your thigh, and sometimes all the way into your foot. You might also experience numbness or tingling in the affected leg.
Why You Shouldn’t Just “Deal With It”
For many people, back pain seems to come and go. But what many patients don’t realize is that the underlying culprits—poor joint mobility, core weakness, and altered movement patterns—remain. Ignoring these root causes leaves your spine vulnerable and sets you up for a much more severe injury down the road.
How We Help You Find Lasting Relief
Back pain and sciatica are highly treatable through targeted, evidence-based physiotherapy. When you visit us, we don’t just give you a generic sheet of stretches. We create a customized roadmap for your recovery:
Phase 1: Immediate Pain Relief. Our first priority is utilizing hands-on therapy and targeted modalities to calm your nervous system, reduce inflammation, and alleviate your acute pain.
Phase 2: Restoring Mobility & Strength. As your pain subsides, we focus on rebuilding the foundation. We will introduce specific therapeutic exercises to strengthen your core, improve your pelvic flexibility, and decompress the spine. For sciatica patients, we utilize specialized nerve-gliding stretches to free the sciatic nerve and restore its natural function.
Phase 3: Future Injury Prevention. We don’t want to see you back for the same issue! We will teach you proper lifting mechanics, daily ergonomics, and at-home maintenance strategies to keep your spine healthy and resilient for life.
