Arthritis Management & Pain Relief

Don’t Let Joint Pain Dictate Your Day

Do you ever wake up feeling like your joints are locked, stiff, or tight? Does the ache slowly fade as you get moving, only to return after a long day?

If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing the early signs of arthritis. While arthritis is incredibly common, far too many people choose to just “live with it” for years before seeking help. You don’t have to accept joint pain as a normal part of aging. At Encore Physiotherapy and Wellness, our goal is to help you manage your symptoms, protect your joints, and get back to moving with ease and confidence.

Understanding Your Joint Pain

According to the Arthritis Society, arthritis affects over 6 million Canadians, making daily activities difficult for more than 20% of the population. Arthritis causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness, and it can affect one or multiple joints at once.

While there are over 100 types of arthritis, the two most common we treat are:

1. Osteoarthritis (The “Wear and Tear” Arthritis) This is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones gradually wears down over time. Without that thick cushion, the bones rub together, triggering pain and inflammation.

  • How it develops: Osteoarthritis is often the result of aging, repetitive strain (like a physically demanding job), carrying excess body weight, or even a past sports injury that alters how your joint moves later in life.

  • Common symptoms: A deep ache in the joint, stiffness after resting, a grinding or popping sensation during movement, and pain that worsens with activity.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (Inflammatory Arthritis) Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition. This means your immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy lining of your joints, causing painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

  • How it develops: The exact cause is complex, but researchers believe genetics, environment, and hormones all play a role. It typically affects the same joints on both sides of the body (e.g., both wrists or both knees).

  • Common symptoms: Tender, warm, swollen joints, joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings, and overarching fatigue.

How Physiotherapy Can Help You Find Relief

A diagnosis of arthritis does not mean you have to stop doing what you love. In fact, targeted movement is one of the most effective treatments available. Many of our patients are able to successfully manage their pain and avoid relying on heavy medications, injections, or surgery.

When you visit us, your physiotherapist will conduct a comprehensive physical evaluation to determine the best course of action. Your customized treatment plan will focus on:

  • Restoring Range of Motion: Gentle, targeted therapies to reduce stiffness and improve your joint mobility.

  • Building Strength: Strengthening the muscles surrounding your arthritic joints so they can better absorb shock and support your movements.

  • Improving Biomechanics: Refining the way you walk, bend, and lift to reduce unnecessary strain on your body.

  • Providing Education: Equipping you with safe, effective at-home therapeutic exercises and joint-protection strategies so you can confidently manage your condition long-term.
